Council notifying tenant of proposed deductions from tenancy deposit

A letter for a council to send to a private tenant confirming a proposal by their landlord to deduct amounts from the tenancy deposit, and giving them an opportunity to make representations.

This letter assumes that:

  • The council previously paid the tenant's landlord money to be held as a tenancy deposit, for the purpose of securing the accommodation, e.g. to discharge a homelessness duty.
  • That money remains the council's property.
  • The tenant agreed to reimburse the council for any legitimate deductions made to the deposit, e.g. because the tenant fails to pay rent due or because they damage the property.
